Scholarship Center

Friedrich-Wilhelms-University, Bonn, Germany
Department of Oral Surgery, Surgery and Prosthodontics

The first dental implant carried out in the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Bonn was in 1979. From the very start, the Dental School in Bonn took an interdisciplinary approach to planning, teaching and provision of treatment using implant dentistry that was shared between the Department of Oral Surgery and the Department of Prosthodontics. In the 1980s, the Department was selected as part of a multi-center trial for immediate implants after extraction using the "Tübinger Sofortimplantat".

Nowadays about 75 percent of indications for implants are for partially edentulous situations with single-tooth gaps, distal extension situations or extended edentulous spaces. Bone augmentation procedures including GBR technique and sinus grafting are increasingly being requested and applied. In addition to the various fields of implant dentistry, the department also carries out general oral surgery, particularly in traumatology and interdisciplinary treatment modalities with patients from the other university clinics (hemorrhagic, oncology and transplantation patients) as well as stomatology.

ITI Scholars in Bonn participate in all phases of surgical therapy from the first appointment and treatment planning through to post-surgical maintenance care. The interdisciplinary approach to implant dentistry in cooperation with the Department of Prosthodontics also makes it possible to follow every step of prosthetic restorations. This means that ITI Scholars assist during consulting, surgical and outpatient procedures and in general implant maintenance care as well as prosthetic therapies. We also aim to involve ITI Scholars in research projects dealing with implant dentistry or related fields.

The right to provide the full range of treatment to patients, including placement of implants, is regulated by the government and is also subject to insurance requirements. Those Scholars with the appropriate postgraduate status as well as proof of their ability to communicate proficiently in German to B2 level as approved by a recognized language school such as the Goethe Institut will receive a work permit.

Scholars with a work permit may not place implants themselves but can assist in the treatment of patients in other fields of oral surgery as well as in maintenance care implant dentistry procedures. Scholars who do not fulfill the above requirements will only be issued with a residence permit allowing them to observe and consult on treatment procedures but not carry them out. In order to obtain the necessary permits from the local authorities in good time, Scholars are requested to contact the department as soon as possible after having been accepted for the Scholarship year.
